GEO: Help AI Assistants Describe Your Business Accurately

Making the facts about your business clear, consistent and easy to cite, wherever AI assistants and search engines look for them.

What GEO Is

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of making sure AI assistants can find accurate information about your business and describe it correctly.

More buyers now start with a question to an AI assistant, or read an AI-written summary at the top of a search page, before they visit any website. Those answers are written from sources the assistant has learned from or found: your website, your listings, directories, reviews and articles that mention you.

GEO doesn’t trick an assistant into recommending you. It makes the right facts easy to find and hard to misread: who you are, what you do, where you work and why a buyer might choose you. If an assistant does describe you, the aim is that the description is accurate.

GEO vs SEO

They overlap more than they differ. The difference is mainly in what you check and what you are aiming for.

How AI Assistants Tend to Find and Describe Businesses

General patterns, not rules. Each assistant works differently, and all of them change often.

  • Some answers come from live search. When an assistant searches the web to answer, it tends to draw on pages that already rank well and often shows the sources it used.
  • Some come from what the model learned. Without a live search, an assistant answers from its training, which can be months out of date. Old facts about a business can linger this way.
  • Plain statements are easier to repeat. A sentence that clearly states what a business does and where is more likely to be used than a slogan.
  • Agreement across sources matters. When several independent sources describe a business the same way, assistants tend to repeat that description with more confidence.
  • Mistakes travel. An outdated phone number in an old directory can end up in an answer. Fixing the source is usually the only reliable cure.

How an AI Visibility Check Works

A check makes something vague measurable. This is the typical method, and what to ask for if someone runs it for you.

1. Pick the Questions

What happens
Write down 15 to 30 questions your buyers actually ask, in their words: “best clinic software for a small diagnostic centre”, “CRM for a property broker in Pune”, and the brand questions too, such as your business name plus “reviews” or “alternatives”.

2. Ask Across Assistants and Search

What happens
Ask each question in several AI assistants and in search engines that show AI-written answers, signed out where possible, and save the full answer.

3. Record What Appears

What happens
For each answer, note the date, whether your business appears, how it is described, whether the description is correct, and which sources are cited or linked.

4. Repeat on a Schedule

What happens
Ask the same questions again each month. Answers vary between runs and between users, so look for patterns over several checks rather than reacting to one answer.

What Improves How You’re Described

Most of this is ordinary good practice for a business website. GEO simply checks whether it reaches AI answers.

Clear Business Facts on Your Own Site

Why it helps
Assistants tend to describe a business using the plainest statements they can find. A page that says exactly what you do, for whom, and where, in one or two sentences, gives them something accurate to repeat.

About and Organisation Structured Data

Why it helps
Structured data states your name, address, contact details and services in a format machines read reliably, so they are less likely to guess.

Answer-Style Service Pages and FAQs

Why it helps
Pages that answer the questions buyers ask, directly and early, are easier to quote than pages written as a brochure.

Consistent Listings and Profiles

Why it helps
When your name, phone number, address and description match everywhere, an assistant is less likely to mix you up with someone else or repeat outdated details.

Helpful, Specific Content

Why it helps
Guides and explanations that show real expertise give assistants a reason to cite you on topics beyond your own name.

Mentions on Trusted Sites

Why it helps
Independent sites that mention you, such as industry directories, associations or local press, often appear among the sources cited. These are earned, not bought.

Much of this overlaps with our SEO work, which covers structured data in the technical audit, consistent business details across your site and listings, and service pages and articles written to answer customers’ questions clearly. As with our SEO work, there are no bought links.

What to Ask For

Whoever does GEO work for you, these four things make it accountable.

  • The check report. Every question asked, where, when, the answer in full, and whether you appeared and how.
  • A prioritised fix list. What to change, in order, with the reason for each item.
  • Help putting it right. Changes made on your site and profiles, not just a list of advice.
  • A monthly re-check. The same questions, asked again, compared with the last result.

What We Don’t Promise

No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer. We fix what’s in your control and measure the enquiries that result, just as nobody controls Google’s rankings in SEO.

Treat any promise of “guaranteed AI visibility” with the same caution as “page one, guaranteed”. The honest version is a dated record of what assistants say about you, and a steady list of improvements to the things you can control.

How It Works

A typical GEO engagement runs in four steps, then repeats the last two.

Check

Typical
Run the first visibility check and a review of your site, profiles and listings, so there is a baseline with dates.

Prioritise

Typical
Turn what the check found into a short fix list, ordered by what is most likely to change how you are described.

Fix

Typical
Correct facts, add structured data, rewrite or add answer-style pages, and tidy listings and profiles.

Re-Check

Typical
Repeat the same questions each month and compare with the baseline, noting what changed and what didn’t.

GEO Questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

What Does GEO Stand For?

Generative engine optimisation: making your business easy for AI assistants and AI-written search answers to find, understand and describe accurately. Some people call it AI search optimisation or answer engine optimisation.

Is GEO Replacing SEO?

No. Most of GEO rests on the same foundations as SEO: pages search engines can read, clear content and accurate structured data. Many AI answers draw on web search results, so neglecting SEO usually hurts GEO too. See SEO and digital marketing.

Can You Guarantee ChatGPT Will Mention Us?

No. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI answer, from ChatGPT or any other assistant. Answers change between runs, between users and when the products are updated. Anyone promising a guaranteed mention is guessing.

Which AI Assistants Should We Check?

The ones your buyers are likely to use. In practice that usually means a few of the widely used assistants plus the AI-written answers in the search engines your market uses. Checking several matters because each one can describe you differently.

How Long Before Anything Changes?

There is no reliable timetable. Some assistants pick up changes on your site quickly when they search the web; others reflect what they learned during training, which is updated less often. That is why checks are dated and repeated.

What If an Assistant Describes Us Wrongly?

Find where the wrong fact comes from. It is often an old listing, an outdated page on your own site, or a directory with old details. Correcting the source, and stating the right fact clearly on your own site, is usually more effective than anything else.

Does GEO Help Local Businesses?

Often, yes. Buyers ask assistants for providers in their city. Consistent business details across your site and listings, and pages that make clear which areas you serve, help both local search and AI answers.

How Do We Measure It?

With the same fixed set of questions, asked on a schedule and recorded with the date: whether you appear, how you are described, and which sources are cited. Alongside that, keep measuring the enquiries your site produces, because that is what pays for the work.
